Korea District Elementary School Math Pilot To ensure student access to high-quality math instruction we have implemented the Korea District Elementary Mathematics Pilot, Grades 2-5. The objectives of this pilot program are designed to provide elementary teachers opportunities to learn new or additional math content and instructional strategies, study how students learn math, analyze issues in the teaching of math, and use new materials and technology that have been designed to support math instruction. The pilot is one piece of a district-wide initiative to improve math instruction and to improve student learning and achievement in math. This program is committed to providing on-going, side-by-side instructional support to teachers as they incorporate effective math instruction into their daily classroom activities. The Korea Math Initiative is made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Korea District Office and the Office of the Director for the Area-Pacific/DDESS Guam schools. The primary support mechanism for the math Pilot is the use of an elementary math coach who collaboratively works hand-in-hand with elementary math teachers to improve math instruction, to improve teacher knowledge and understanding of math content, and ultimately to improve student learning and student achievement in math. We believe that increased student achievement in math will be an outcome of improved math instruction. Therefore, the primary goals of this pilot are two-fold.
